Why was puzzle no. 4 so easy?
On the blog post (link above) I had mentioned that this puzzle was a speed-construct, at least compared to my normal process. I thought there were a few rough spots, but that’s probably more about the fill than the difficulty of the solve. One thing I’ll say about making a good, hard themeless is that it takes a lot longer to clue it well. If I had had more time, the cluing may have made for more of a challenge.
The grid is more open than the average themeless, but those long 15s may help make it easier for solving. Once you get a long answer, a lot can fall from that.
One other possibilty, William: You’re getting better.
