i'm definitely no expert on crosswords but it is very possible that in the early years there was no standard for crosswords such as we have today. you're probably correct but not necessarily.

I had a lot of problems with this one. A COVE (26-across) is not a "spot to moor" unless your boat can be made fast to a dock, pier, wharf, slip or some other man-made structure. In this case, a better clue would have been a "spot to anchor." "DANL" (44-across) was a poor crossword. Its clue was worse. RENU (45-across) is a brand name word that I would guess is only familiar to some (but not all) people who wear contact lenses. It was certainly a stumper to me. SPERRY (46-across) did not invent the "gyro," a Greek sandwich. SPERRY invented the gyroscope. ERGS (55-across) and DYNE (44-down) ... what can I say. This whole puzzle was a real stretch.

Good point, Bob. It was odd to have Farrell talk about Renner after his role working with Bridges.

Penn was having a bad night and <a href="http://www.monstersandcritics.com/people/news/article_1539541.php/Sean-Penn-booted-out-of-Oscars-party-after-fight" rel="nofollow">should have skipped the ball</a>. Not exactly a class act.

<>

They used to make a big deal out of not using the word "winner." I remember when they started this, and then many times after when it would accidentally slip out and the presenter would correct themselves. After Sunday night, who knows?

I thought the show moved at a good pace with the reordering of the awards--screenwriting up front, then rushing through the technicals mid-show. But it all fell apart during best acting presentations when they brought out the 5 actors to tell the nominees how wonderful they were (did they do that last year, too?). Tucci was the only good one. And was Farrell avoiding Bridges glare as he extolled Renner??

Does anyone know what the hell Sean Penn was taking about before he presented?
